That old TV in the closet, the dead laptop in the drawer, the printer that never worked right - electronics pile up because nobody's sure where they go. In BC, the answer is actually better than most provinces: a lot of e-waste recycling is free. Here's how it works and when it's worth booking a pickup instead.

Why Electronics Can't Go in the Garbage

Electronics are banned from Metro Vancouver garbage and landfills, and for good reason:

**Toxic materials**: Old CRT TVs contain several pounds of lead; circuit boards carry mercury, cadmium, and flame retardants

**Recoverable value**: Copper, aluminum, gold, and steel in e-waste are worth recovering - a recycled TV is a resource, a landfilled TV is contamination

**It's the law**: BC's recycling regulation makes manufacturers fund end-of-life recycling, which is why depots take your electronics free

Put a TV in your building's garbage room and it will sit there - haulers won't take it, and stratas trace bulky dumping back to units.

The Free Route: Return-It Electronics Depots

BC's Return-It Electronics program accepts a long list of items at no charge:

**TVs** - any size, any age, including old CRTs

**Computers, laptops, tablets** - plus monitors, keyboards, and mice

**Printers, scanners, fax machines**

**Audio/video gear** - receivers, speakers, DVD players, game consoles

**Small appliances and power tools** - through the related small appliance program at many depots

There are depots across Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, and the rest of Metro Vancouver. If you can carry the item and get it there, this route costs nothing.

**One tip before you drop off a computer**: wipe or remove the hard drive. Depots recycle responsibly, but your data is your responsibility.

When the Free Route Doesn't Work

The depot route assumes you can lift and transport the item. That breaks down when:

**The TV is huge** - a 65"+ flat screen is awkward for one person, and an old rear-projection or CRT console can weigh 100-200 lbs

**It's not just the TV** - the electronics are part of a bigger cleanout with furniture, boxes, and general junk

**Stairs are involved** - carrying a console TV down three flights is how backs get injured
